A story about a pirate.
Once upon a time a pirate came ashore at a little port. Everybody stared at him for he was quite a character, weather-beaten and tough, hard-drinking and jocular. Not only that, but he had a wooden leg, a hook and an eye-patch. Everybody’s idea of what a pirate should indeed look like. He sat down at a bar and people were eager to chat.
“Tell me,” said one man, “how did you come to lose your leg?”
“Ah, me leg!!” the pirate’s voice boomed out, “me leg! Well, it were four year ago when I were travellin’ the South Seas. Shark got me. That’s how come I lost me leg. Shark bit it clean off.”
A general murmur of awe went around the room.
“And how did you lose your hand?” asked another man, looking at the hook.
“Ah, me hand!” exclaimed the pirate. “Me hand! Well, that were in in North Pole. A polar bear got me. Polar bear. Bit me hand clean off.”
Another general murmur of awe went around the room.
“And you eye?” asked a third man.
“Ah, me eye!” cried the pirate. “Me eye! Well, y’see I had some saw dust in me eye, and I had only just got me hook ….”
