Horses for Chloe : today’s sketch. The English in France.
“Bonjour Madame,” said Chloe.
“Bonjour Chloe,” I replied, and I bent down for the obligatory bisou.
“What are you doing?” she asked (but in French).
“I am writing a story,” I said.
“Why?”
“Because that is my work, ma petite, I am a writer, I write books.”
I took a few off the shelf and she looked solemnly at them. After some thought she sighed and shrugged her shoulders.
“Well, I need a picture of a horse,” she declared with an air of patient suffering.
“And the magic word is …?”
“S’il vous plait, Madame,” she grinned.
I gave her a selection of copies of horse pictures I have done over the years. She pulled off her mittens to take them and exclaimed:
“Humph ! Don’t I get a new one?!”
